President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, and Chairman Tai-Chiang Gou of Foxlink have engaged in a general discussion of the cooperation of biomedical industry development in Taiwan and reached a consensus to arrange future meeting to further explore the topic.
Foxlink Chairman Tai-Chiang Gou has met NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai for the first time, visited NCKU College of Medicine and participated in the briefing of NCKU College of Medicine.
NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai expressed, “Medical field and engineering field are the development focus of National Cheng Kung University. The integration of medicine and engineering, one of the advantages of NCKU, is beneficial to the development of biomedicine. Especially in academia-industry cooperation, NCKU has always been one of the pioneers, hoping to combine the power of the industry and jointly develop biomedical industry in Taiwan.”
President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai also mentioned, “NCKU has formed alliances with Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, U.S., and Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel, to develop biomedical research.”
President Lai believed, “We should look at social needs from the medical point of view. The development of information technology in Taiwan should move toward knowledge economy, rather than focusing merely on manufacture, to expand new fields of academia-industry cooperation.”
Chairman Tai-Chiang Gou of Foxlink recommended, “The integration of IT industry and medical treatment and the establishment of platform for information exchange will attract higher investment interests of more industries.”
Chairman Tai-Chiang Gou also said, “There are great development opportunities for biomedicine and equipments in Taiwan. In addition to the market in Taiwan, the outlet includes overseas market, thus the investment and production environment in Taiwan still needs improvement.”
Chairman Gou believed, “The integration of information technology and medical treatment is the future trend. The industry of information technology is closely related to medical treatment. For example, iPod can be used in medical record management and data transmission for doctors to easily understand and control the conditions of the patients.”
Dr. Chyi-Her Lin, Dean of NCKU College of Medicine, revealed, “NCKU has recently initiated the slogan of Orange Technology, the integration of biomedicine and engineering. It especially targets the medical care of elders, so they can be taken care of at home without being hospitalized.”
Dr. Ih-Jen Su, the Associate Dean of NCKU College of Medicine, stated, “The research capacity of Taiwan is very strong, but we lack assistance in the downstream output. How to incorporate the research achievements of professors is a mechanism Taiwan currently lacks.”
Chairman Tai-Chiang Gou of Foxlink stressed, “In addition to the assistance of the government, the sharing of partial resources to biomedical industry and the promotion of the development of biomedicine requires the participation of the society. This is the main purpose of my visit to NCKU.”
